The story

... about Herolds Varehus!

The story
The story about Herolds Varehus

Herolds Varehus was started by Henry and Mary Herold in 1896 in Dybbølsgade in Copenhagen, where Henry, under small condition, started Herolds Varehus with article such as hardware for household for the working class families. They sold in this way all kinds of articles, which as often was produced by local a workman, who in this way was able to have an extra income to past tense small pays.

In 1923 Herolds Varehus moved to Amager – Øresundsvej 21. Herolds Varehus was now to consider as a great wholesaler and the choice of articles was very strong expanded. Henry and his son Stanley invented a lot of things and a production was started such as pieces of jewellery, toys and so on. But still in that way it was a lot of families who worked for them. It was a hard time and there were very great satisfaction by those families, who in that way was able to maintain a better life.

When Henry was young have travelled around as a timber, in Denmark called “Naver” (travelling Journeyman), he had worked many places in Europe, meant that his sun Stanley should try to contact these companies to start up an import. But at Stanley´s travelling around in Europe, special in the impoverish German in the 1930´ties, found that many companies was in a poor health, that gave them the opportunity to buy whole factories productions which was for sale when factories closed down. He sent the articles home to Denmark. Soon it was difficult to find place for all the articles. There are in fact a lot of these articles from his journeys still on stock – how amazing it must sound.

In 1943 Stanley and his wife Else took over the shop. Active Stanley have again expand the choice of articles with his colourful temperament, it was a natural development, that the shop became more articles in the group of practical jokes and articles for the feasts. Even though the shop have its primary function as wholesaler, there was sold from the shop to the ordinals people, it was very impotent for Stanley and Else who loved to present the articles to children as well as grown ups – to a lot of fun- specially for Stanley who loved to make jokes on the customers.

Stanley and Else continued travelling around in whole Europe and countless destinations they have visit – often in business, but also as at tourists. When they were on these journey’s they closed the shop, put at notes in the shop window and then the customers just have to wait for their return.

In 1960 they stopped as wholesaler, and now they primary had the shop. The title as wholesaler Stanley kept as you could not let down old business customers at that reason.

Now they only buying to the shop an they continued to sell out from the stock from the big buying in the 1930-40-50´ties. From here the earlier mention articles still are to find in the shop. It is what makes Herolds Varehus so special, and we stand by and say that we are very unique with our articles.

Herolds Varehus was in many ways already a institution at that time. The shop have not change since 1923 when it opened Stanley and Else has always felt privileged when they talked with the customers, who has been there since they was children, and now was there with there family to introduce Herolds Varehus to them.

Stanley and Else was always ready th help their family in all kind of ways. Specially the children and the young ones, they should always come to the shop and be spoiled with toys and so on when they visit them. Toys and jokes was something we children was able to use and we felt very proud when we talked to our friends about that we had at toy shop in our family. So we always look forward to visit them.

Some of the articles was sold to Danish television for used to productions of films from old times such as the Danish “Matador” in 1978 they delivered shoelace , buttons on original packaging, needles and sewing thread, which you se in the film, and this articles are still to buy in the shop.

Stanley and Else did not become any children. When Stanley died in 1977 his wife Else continued on her own until she died in a age of 83 in 1995. Hereafter Elses nephew John and his Wife Winnie took over the shop without changing the way the shop was. In 2006 it was no longer possible for them to continue so their son Jean and daughter in low Connie took over. It is in that way the 4. Generation behind the old counter you find if you visit the shop.

If you visit the shop today, you will soon find out that nothing has changed since 1923 except from a few changes such as the heating stove have been changed with a petroleum stove and Herolds Varehus has acquired a debit card terminal. And the last change is the internet shop where you found yourself now.
